Time in role:
First Class Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) – The University of Liverpool
I first joined Pochin’s in 2007 when I completed my A Levels. My role on site was to work as a chain man assisting the site engineer. I worked at Pochin’s in this role until June 2008 when I left for University for three years. I re-joined Pochin’s in June 2011 as a Graduate Engineer on the Buxton Water Bottling Plant. It was on this project that I moved from setting out to site management and began to work as a section manager on some of the smaller areas of the project.
Following on from this role I spent six months as a site manager at Buckshaw Village before being given the opportunity to act as the project lead on a £1million gym. Since then I have been on numerous high value projects as a site manager working with a project manager or as project lead on smaller value projects.
I am currently working as a Site Manager on our Sky Gardens project in Manchester.
What made you want to join the construction industry?
My father worked in the construction industry for 10 years as an electrician and I always wanted to work within or alongside the industry in some form. Initially I aspired to be an architect, but I was put off by the lengthy University sentence. It was during sixth form that I decided that I wanted to work on site as an engineer initially. Whilst in sixth form I decided that I would ‘test the water’ before committing myself to university and the industry. In the year spent at Pochin’s before University the main factor in my decision to work in construction was the sense of achievement when completing a project.
Where do you think we will see you in five years’ time?
My current aim is to move from Site Manager to Project Manager in the next couple of years. My aim for the next five years is to earn experience as a Project Manager on medium value projects and working towards managing larger value projects.
