Managing Quantity Surveyor
Time in role:
BSc Quantity Surveying
HNC Building Production Technology
I started my career in the construction industry at the age of 16 following completion of my GCSE’s. I then embarked on a journey which would ultimately gain me a BSc in Quantity Surveying. I did this via completion of a BTEC at St Helens Technology College, HNC and subsequently a BSc at John Moores University all on a Day Release option of study.
During my career I have worked on both the client and contractors side as a Quantity Surveyor with my preference clearly being working for a contractor, this being due to the more ‘hands on’ day-to-day involvement of projects.
During the 10 years of my career pre-Pochin’s in 2012 I have been employed by both private QS Practises and a couple of main contractors.
What made you want to join the construction industry?
Having close family in the industry I felt that I was always going to end up in the construction industry – it was more a question of in what sort of capacity/role. My early thinking was to explore the route of Architecture – however it was the duration of full time study which was required to gain such a role that put me off. I therefore sorted exploring and researching the variety of roles in a professional construction team and QS-ing seemed to tick all the boxes. Following the completion of my secondary school education I wanted a career where I could ‘learn on the job’. A trainee scheme with the Day Release method of study offered that opportunity.
Where do you think we will see you in five years’ time?
Having started at Pochin’s as a Project Quantity Surveyor in June 2012 I have been promoted to Senior Quantity Surveyor and most recently Managing Quantity Surveyor. Therefore the next 5 years is about consolidating that position and gaining as much experience as possible to fulfil that position to the best of my ability, for myself and the company.
