Catherine Norris

Quantity Surveyor

Time in role:

3 years

BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

I began working for Pochin’s in 2014 as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. Formally my experience was in house building, but I wanted to broaden my knowledge and experience in general construction. After completing my first site as an Assistant QS, I was promoted to Quantity Surveyor and was given the opportunity to take responsibility for my own projects. Since then I have worked on a variety of different schemes, including hotel, car showroom and warehouse units, all of which have been very different and interesting. Each has enabled me to gain a greater understanding of the construction process involved from start to completion.

What made you want to join the construction industry?

I did not intentionally set out for a career in construction, but looking back at all I have achieved I am pleased I continued down this route. It has allowed me to gain numerous qualifications, whilst working in the industry and having the support of my peers. Quantity surveying was my preferred route as I think long-term it gives the opportunity to pursue various different roles.

Where do you think we will see you in five years’ time?

I would like to continue working within this role, expanding on the type and complexity of projects, increasing in value and scale and working my way up to a Senior Quantity Surveyor position. I have started my RICS twice previously but never had the chance to complete, so that is also a possibility within the next 5 years.
